The service

Why Parquet
Is Different

Parquet is built from many small blocks laid with the grain running in different directions. That is what makes the pattern attractive, and it is also why parquet cannot be treated like a plain plank floor. Heavy sanding across changing grain can leave marks, and a block that has lost its glue will keep lifting no matter how nice the surface looks.

So we repair from the bottom up. Loose and missing blocks are dealt with first, gaps are filled, and only then is the surface buffed. Buffing uses fine pads to refresh the finish with very little material removed, which is gentler on thin blocks than full sanding.

Hands-on guide

Find the fault,
see the fix

Tap a marker on the sample parquet floor to see what each problem means and how we repair it.

Sample floor diagram

Hollow block

The block sounds empty when tapped, which means the adhesive underneath has failed. We lift it, clean the bed and re-fix it so it sits flat again.

Missing block

A gap in the pattern. We cut or source a matching block, fit it into the pattern and blend the colour as closely as the species allows.

Open gap

Joints that have opened between blocks collect dirt. They are cleaned and filled so the surface reads as one piece.

Lifting edge

A corner or edge that has curled up catches shoes and can break. We press, re-glue or replace it depending on the damage.

Dull, cloudy finish

Worn coating shows as patchy sheen. After repairs, buffing and a fresh coat bring back a uniform surface.

Is it time?

Signs Parquet
Needs Repair

Parquet problems rarely fix themselves. These are the common early warnings.

  • A hollow sound underfoot

Tap a block with a knuckle. A drum-like sound points to adhesive that has let go.

  • Blocks popping up at the corners

Edges that lift are tripping hazards and often crack when stepped on.

  • Holes in the pattern

Missing blocks tend to come from old repairs or blocks that worked loose and got lost.

  • Widening joints

Dirt builds up in gaps, and the pattern starts to look uneven.

  • Cloudy or patchy shine

Foot traffic wears the coating in lanes and leaves the pattern looking dull.

  • Squeaks in one area

Often a few loose blocks over the same patch of subfloor.

Our process

How we repair
and buff parquet

What happens and when: tap and map first, recoat and cure last.

  1. 01

    Tap and map

We tap across the floor and mark every hollow, loose and missing block so the work is planned before anything is lifted.

  2. 02

    Lift and clean the bed

Loose blocks are removed and old adhesive is cleaned off, giving the new glue a sound surface.

  3. 03

    Re-fix or replace

Blocks go back in pattern order. Where one is damaged or gone, we fit a matching replacement.

  4. 04

    Fill and level

Gaps are filled and the new blocks are levelled with their neighbours.

  5. 05

    Buff the surface

A buffing machine and fine pads refresh the surface across the whole pattern, with minimal wood removal.

  6. 06

    Recoat and cure

A fresh protective coat evens out the sheen and we advise on drying before normal use.

Keeping
Parquet Bright

  • Wipe spills at once; water under blocks can loosen the adhesive.
  • Put mats by doors and under plant pots.
  • Use soft felt on furniture feet and avoid dragging.
  • Report a hollow block early, because small repairs are quicker than large ones.
Questions

Parquet
Repair FAQs

8 honest answers, starting with: Can missing parquet blocks be replaced?

Can missing parquet blocks be replaced?
Yes. We can cut or source blocks of a similar species, thickness and size and fit them into the pattern. Exact colour matching depends on how aged the surrounding floor is, so we blend through the finishing stage.
Why does my parquet sound hollow?
A hollow sound usually means the adhesive under the block has failed, often from moisture or age. Re-fixing the block stops the movement and noise.
Is buffing the same as sanding?
No. Sanding removes wood and the finish. Buffing uses fine pads to refresh the surface with very little material removed, which is why it suits thin parquet blocks.
Can you match my old parquet colour?
We can get close. Old parquet has darkened with age, so new blocks usually need tone blending as part of the finish. We discuss this before replacing anything.
Why are gaps appearing between my blocks?
Timber expands and contracts with humidity, and a floor that is regularly cooled and warmed will move a little. Gaps are cleaned and filled during repair.
How do I get a parquet repair quote?
Send a photo of the whole room plus close-ups of damaged areas, and tell us the pattern if you know it. A short video of you tapping the floor also helps.
How long does replacing a few parquet blocks take?
Re-fixing or replacing a small group of blocks is usually done the same day. The adhesive needs time to set before the area is levelled, buffed and recoated, so we confirm the full timing after the tap test.
Why does my parquet look uneven after years of use?
Wear, moisture and loose blocks change the surface. Re-fixing loose blocks and a careful buff usually brings it back to an even finish.
